John Roger Stewart



John Roger Stewart born 11 February 1876 Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, reg. Jan-Mar 1876 Gateshead, vol. 10a page 879, son of James Stewart and Mary Findlay Roger, died 31 May 1939 Timaru aged 63 years, reg. 1939/15726, buried 3 June 1939, Timaru Cemetery, General Section, row 43, plot 289, married 14 March 1908, New Plymouth, New Zealand, reg, 1908/502, Louise Gwillim [probably the same person as Louisa Gwillim born 10 June 1872, baptised 25 August 1872 St John, Hoxton, Hackney, London daughter of Thomas Gwillim (cheesemonger) and Frances Sharp, arrived Wellington, New Zealand 26 February 1906 on the R.M.S. "Corinthic" from London with her brother Thomas Ashdown Gwillim, her age is shown as 20 years, however she would then have been aged 33 years], died 16 November 1954 Timaru aged 81 years, reg. 1954/27221, cremated in Christchurch.

Two brothers, James Roger Stewart and Edward Roger Stewart also came to New Zealand. James Roger Stewart born 9 March 1874 Dundee, Scotland came to New Zealand about 1902 after serving in the Boer War of 1899-1902 with Robert's Horse. Later served as a Private during WWI with the Otago Infantry Regiment, D Company, 27th Reinforcements, number 53729. The other brother Edward Roger Stewart born circa 1879 England, was a photographer in Ashburton.

This studio open in Timaru in March 1920 and remained operating until at least 1957, possibly then managed or owned by his brother Edward Roger Stewart photographer in Ashburton.

To-day Mr J. R. Stewart, photographer, opens the Lorne Studios, in premises formerly known as the Mahan Studio, in the Arcade, Timaru. Mr  Stewart comes from Wellington with twenty-seven years' experience in general photography, and portrait work in particular. The working apparatus is very complete, and enables Mr Stewart to execute very fine art portraiture and also complete panoramic work. The Lorne Studios are prepared to execute wedding groups, either at your residence or in the studio
